how to host an amazing party and adult fig newtons

I love having people over.

And I think throwing parties is an art.

My essentials for throwing an amazing party (in no particular order):

  • The right kind of playlist. What kind of energy do I want to generate? Typically I err on the side of upbeat indie tracks with a few non-obnoxious pop songs for familiarity. Volume level is also crucial.
  • Scented candles. I light them about 10 min before guests arrive.
  • Attention to the bathroom. I put personal items aside, put out nice hand soap and lotion, fresh hand towels and light candles.
  • Fresh flowers.
  • A space for drinks. And I like to give a guest the job of bartender. It takes the pressure off me and gives them a special role.
  • Food. I generally stick to easy and healthy finger foods (and then I eat all the sugary treats guests bring). But I always have snacks on hand.
  • Last night I had some friends over for a going away party and entered a few new food and drink recipes into my party rotation.

I made shrimp salad with light quark and cottage cheese, herbs and spices (dill!), cucumber, avocado and tomatoes. It was a low-cal protein-packed hit!

I’m working on perfecting my skinny moscow mule. This time, I tried vanilla vodka, sparking water and ginger juice (I boiled ginger and used that instead of ginger ale).

Finally, I made a new dessert. These walnut and fig bars came from Sarah Britton’s seasonal cookbook, My New Roots. The crust is a blend of walnuts, oats, and spices. The filling is pureed dried figs, applesauce, spices, and a touch of maple syrup. They were so good! Not too sweet and would be perfect for breakfast too.

A perfect party on a perfect Saturday night.
