Fall Goal: Set Long-Term Goals

So, I’m eating. And I’m moving. And I finally have time to stop, evaluate and set long-term goals. For me, it helps to regularly question why I’m doing what I’m doing and what I need to change.

A while back I read The Art of Non-Conformity by Chris Guillebeau. I visited his website and discovered a short manifesto he wrote, A Brief Guide to World Domination. (click the title to get a free copy from his web site). While it’s nothing revolutionary in terms of goal setting, I think it’s a great way to take inventory of life. And I love how he asks if we want to be unremarkably average (which is ok…if that’s your goal).

He poses two main questions:

1. What do you really want to get out of life?
He uses an exercise from Paul Myers called the Ideal World exercise, where you write down a very detailed version of your absolutely perfect day. Then you make changes in your real life to get your real day closer to your ideal.

2. What can you offer the world that no one else can?
I love this part. He makes a point to say that we need to be doing something for the greater good, and this shouldn’t be separate from our pursuit of our goals.

I’m excited to do the Ideal World exercise. It’s pretty long and involved, but I think it will be worth it. And I’m excited to follow Chris’ steps on how not to be unremarkably average.
